Short answer: for anything made of wood, fabric, leather or paper, and for electronics, yes. Rockport air rarely dries out, and a closed metal shed or garage on the coast traps that moisture with heat that can run well over 100 degrees in summer. Tools, patio furniture and things that already live outside can go in a regular space. Climate units at 188 Storage start at $65 a month for a 5x10.

What coastal humidity does to stored things

Humidity does its damage slowly, so most people find out when they open the door months later. What we hear about most:

  • Mattresses, couches and clothes: a musty smell first, then mildew spots that don’t wash out.
  • Wood furniture: drawers that swell and stick, veneer that lifts, joints that loosen.
  • Photos, books and paperwork: pages that ripple, photos that stick together, boxes that go soft at the bottom.
  • Electronics and appliances: corrosion on contacts and circuit boards you can’t see until something won’t turn on.
  • Leather, musical instruments and artwork: mold on leather, warped guitar necks, wavy canvas.
  • Metal: salt air speeds up rust on anything bare, from tools to bike chains.

If you’re unsure about one item, ask yourself whether you’d leave it in a closed garage through August. If the answer is no, it belongs indoors. Our list of what not to store in your garage on the Texas coast goes item by item.

Why it matters in winter too

November through March is when a lot of Rockport storage changes hands. Winter Texans set up in a condo and need somewhere for the extra furniture. Families clear the garage for holiday guests. Folks who moved here this year finally empty the last boxes. The cooler months feel safe, but the stuff usually stays in storage into summer, and that’s when the heat and humidity do their damage. If you’re coming for the season, see the Winter Texan storage guide.

Packing tips for the coast

  • Use plastic bins for anything paper or fabric, and keep cardboard off the floor on a pallet or shelf.
  • Make sure everything is completely dry going in: no damp beach towels, no freshly washed cushions.
  • Cover furniture with cotton sheets, not plastic, so it can breathe.
  • Leave a little space between items and the walls for air to move.
